Description

Cleopatra (Fox, 1917). Title Lobby Card & Lobby Cards (5) (11" X 14").
Perhaps the first actress to become a mega-star and sex symbol in the burgeoning Hollywood, Theda Bara's breakthrough role came early as the scandalous and smoldering "vampire woman" in her second film, A Fool There Was. This "vamp" role would practically define the rest of her career, as Fox perpetually cast Bara as tempting mistresses, femme fatales, and had her wearing costumes considered so outrageously indecent they could give local censors a case of the vapors. The pinnacle of her career, however, came two years later when J. Gordon Edwards cast her in Cleopatra as one of history's greatest seductresses, billed in advertisements with such epithets as "The Vampire Supreme" and "The Siren of the Nile." Bara is at her most queenly in these beautiful images, where all of the cards have touchup to the background and pinholes in the borders. All but one card has had airbrushing in the borders. Prior to restoration, one card had a diagonal crease in the right background, and another card had creases in the background and borders, a pinhole in the right background, small tears in the borders, and a chip in the upper border. Fine+.
