Description

The Misfits (United Artists, 1961). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. French Grande (47" X 63") Roger Soubie Artwork.
The Misfits is a poignant drama directed by John Huston, featuring a legendary cast that includes Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and Montgomery Clift, as well as a screenplay by celebrated playwright Arthur Miller, notably Monroe's then-husband. Set against the rugged Nevada desert, the film follows the emotionally complex relationship between recently divorced Roslyn (Monroe) and aging cowboy Gay Langland (Gable), along with their companions as they attempt to capture wild mustangs among other adventures. Exploring themes of love, loneliness, and the fading spirit of the American West, the story reveals the characters' struggles to find purpose in a rapidly changing world. Known for its raw performances and evocative cinematography, The Misfits is celebrated as both a landmark in American cinema and a bittersweet swan song for Gable and Monroe. This complex emotional narrative is beautifully captured in this glorious French grande by top French artist Roger Soubie, who reimagines the rarely seen international U.S. one-sheet design. Gable, Monroe, and Clift are depicted as puzzle pieces that appear to fit together - but ultimately don't, symbolizing the film's exploration of fractured relationships and unfulfilled desires. Slight airbrushing and touchup throughout have addressed edge and fold wear, pinholes, creases, fold and crossfold, tears, and some chips with additional replacement. Some flaws may remain lightly visible. From the Dominique Besson Collection.
