Description
The Wizard of Oz (MGM, 1939). Fine+. Lobby Card (11" X 14").One of the most mythologized productions in Hollywood, the film's legacy is unmatched in cinema history. The film used Technicolor so innovatively that studio lights had to be incredibly hot to achieve the vibrant look, causing discomfort for many actors, especially Bert Lahr, whose Cowardly Lion costume was made from real lion pelts and weighed over 90 pounds. Judy Garland had to wear a tight corset to appear younger, and her iconic blue-and-white gingham dress was actually pale pink and blue to photograph better in Technicolor and the horses in the Emerald City were colored with Jell-O powder, which the animals kept trying to lick off. The film's original director, Richard Thorpe, was fired early, followed by multiple changes before Victor Fleming took over. Nominated for six Academy Awards, it lost Best Picture to Gone with the Wind, also directed by Victor Fleming. There is edge wear, pinholes to the corners and some in the borders; two small splits to the right edge, corner bumps, minute paper lift, a light crease to the upper left corner and the card has some toning.
