Description

Work (Essanay, 1915). Fine. Photo Lobby Card Set of 12 (8" X 10").
This slapstick comedy from Charlie Chaplin came during his year under contract with Essanay Studios, who successfully hired the comedian away from Keystone Studios with an immense pay increase and his own production unit. Chaplin quickly became the studio's highest earner and thus biggest star, and refined his character of "the Tramp" with many of his trademark mannerisms and behaviors over the course of his 14-film tenure with Essanay. It was also during this year that he became far and away the biggest star in the film industry, not just in the U.S. but worldwide. Heritage proudly offers for the first time at auction a complete 12-card 8" X 10" lobby card set for Chaplin's eighth Essanay film Work, which includes a title card and 11 images of Chaplin in the midst of various gags as the clumsy and absent-minded decorator's apprentice. The cards do show some signs of their age, including staining, small tears or chips, smudges, light scuffs or scratches, and/or toning, and all the cards have pinholes in the top border. The images present with an overall clean appearance.
