Description

Fighting Fate (Vitagraph, 1921). Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (28.25" X 41") Chapter 4 -- "A Desperate Dilemma."
This adventure serial was produced Vitagraph Studios, which like many other members of the dissolved Motion Picture Patents Company was struggling to stay afloat as many of their top stars moved to other growing companies or began producing films independently. Serials had proved to be a reliable format for solid financial success, and stars William Duncan and Edith Johnson (married in real life) were well-known to the public for their work in earlier serials, and Vitagraph found unusual success with Duncan as one of their premiere box office attractions. By the early 1920s Duncan had become one of the highest-paid actors in the industry with his extensive work in serials and Westerns, and Fighting Fate is no exception. Promotional press on the film highlighted that the storytelling between episodes allowed the serial to play more as a more satisfying, whole piece rather than in the more fragmented nature of other contemporary serials. This is offered for the first time by Heritage and movie paper from any of the chapters is extremely rare. Professional restoration included touchup to folds and crossfold separation, chips, and tears in the borders. Paper loss to the center horizontal fold at the left was replaced and parts of the borders were airbrushed.
