Description

The Ghost of Frankenstein (Realart, R-1948). Very Fine. Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14").
By the time of The Ghost of Frankenstein, Boris Karloff had stepped away from the role that made him famous, prompting Universal to cast Lon Chaney Jr., already a horror icon in his own right from his appearance as the Wolf Man in 1941, as the Monster, marking the first time someone other than Karloff donned Jack Pierce's landmark makeup. The film restructured earlier storylines, replacing Basil Rathbone's Wolf von Frankenstein with Sir Cedric Hardwicke as his brother Ludwig, and assembled a strong supporting cast including Bela Lugosi as Ygor, Lionel Atwill as Dr. Bohmer, and Evelyn Ankers as Ludwig's daughter. Chaney brought a new physicality to the role, becoming the only actor in Universal's stable to portray all of the studio's "major" monsters: Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's Monster. Notably, The Ghost of Frankenstein would also be the last time the Monster appeared as the central figure, before being folded into ensemble horror crossovers like Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and House of Frankenstein. These incredible Realart reissue cards boast only minor faults, such as light edge wear, small corner bends, pinholes including pinhole chips and tears, minor creases, slight scuffs and smudges, minute graphite markings along the right border of lobby card #6, and some toning to lobby card #2.
