Description

Triple Trouble (Essanay, 1918). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (28.25" X 42").
This comedy is the final Charlie Chaplin compilation film from Essanay Studios, who between the end of Chaplin's contract with the company in 1916 and this film had released several reissues and re-edited versions of the comedian's work to reap further profit from their biggest star. Triple Trouble includes footage from the unfinished Life, originally planned as Chaplin's first feature, as well as outtakes from Police and new material directed by character actor and Chaplin regular Leo White, and it recycles the ending of Work. The film was the last "new" production from Essanay, as the company subsisted strictly off of reissues and a number of mergers as it faced down antitrust litigation from its days with the Motion Picture Patents Company until it folded in 1920. Heritage proudly offers for the first time in three years the one sheet for Triple Trouble, which features great artwork of Chaplin's "Little Tramp" janitor in a humorous situation in bed (and note that because the public had been misled over and over into seeing re-titled "old" Chaplin shorts with new titles, Essanay added "You've never seen this one" to the top of the poster, even though the "new" material was unused footage and outtakes). Touchup has been applied to moderate tears, fold wear, small chips, mild creases, the "B" in Trouble, the "P" in Chaplin, the "E" is Essanay, and the Essanay logo in the interior, and parts of the borders have been replaced along with all the borders being airbrushed.
