Description
Frankenstein (Universal, R-1947). Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").Frankenstein, directed by James Whale, stands as one of the most enduring masterpieces of horror cinema. Loosely inspired by Mary Shelley's groundbreaking 1818 novel, the film stars Boris Karloff in his legendary portrayal of the Monster, alongside Colin Clive as the tormented Dr. Henry Frankenstein, a scientist obsessed with creating life from death. Released by Universal Pictures in the wake of Dracula's success earlier that same year, Frankenstein became a major box office triumph, earning over $700,000.00 during its initial run. The film's popularity endured through multiple reissues in 1938, 1947, and 1951, before being repackaged in the late 1950s as part of Universal's Shock Theater television syndication. This broadcast initiative ignited a renewed fascination with classic horror, ultimately inspiring the creation of Famous Monsters of Filmland, a magazine now revered by fans as the definitive publication of its genre. Among collectors, the 1947 reissue poster is particularly prized, featuring a striking image of Karloff's menacing visage as the Monster, an unforgettable symbol of cinematic horror. This rare poster has had touchup to the folds to address wear and splits, chips to the fold junctions, a couple small chips in the background area on the right side and a couple scratches in the 'E' of Frankenstein. There has been touchup to a small area above Karloff's brow and areas of his face below the nose. There were areas of touchup to the red background in the lower left quadrant from ink removal and some paper loss going into the lower credits. Touchup was applied through a portion of Clive and Boles' names in the credits and the sentences below have been redone into the James Whale credit. Additionally, there was touchup due to tape removal from the verso around the borders, below the woman's outstretched torso and the borders have been airbrushed. Thanks to these efforts, the poster presents very nicely.
