Description

King Kong (RKO, 1933). Fine on Paper. Insert (14" X 36").
This is the first time in 20+ years of auctions at Heritage that this rare insert has scaled the auction block. An ambitious and technically daring production for its time, the film's groundbreaking stop-motion animation, created by Willis H. O'Brien, set new standards for visual effects, combining miniature sets, rear projection, and innovative design. Fay Wray's iconic scream earned her the title of cinema's first "scream queen," while composer Max Steiner's powerful orchestral score, one of the first fully synchronized film soundtracks, helped shape the emotional tone of modern film music. The Empire State Building finale was filmed using detailed miniatures and matte paintings, and Kong's lifelike movements inspired generations of filmmakers, from Ray Harryhausen to Peter Jackson. Backed to paper, restoration has addressed small chips to the borders and corners, lateral creases and small tears. There are some areas of touchup in the upper areas around Kong and to Fay Wray's image. The borders and the yellow blurb areas have been have been airbrushed and the letters have received some touchup. From the Robert and Carla Schenk Collection.
