Description

Cat People (RKO, 1942). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 40.5"). William Rose Artwork.
A psychological and potentially supernatural thriller combining the talents of producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur, one of several horror pictures the two created over at RKO, this title is always a popular draw whenever the occasion to offer its paper arises. Although considered low-budget by Hollywood standards, Cat People made its mark on the horror genre by virtue of Tourneur's excellent cinematography, which has been emulated countless times since the film's release. What makes the picture a masterpiece was Lewton's avoidance of special effects, focusing on the ambiguity of the potential "panther woman", rather than an overtly supernatural storyline. All of this plays well with the image found on the one sheet, a shadowy melding of Simone Simon's Irena Dubrovna with her supposed feline form, matching Tourneur's style of filming. Restoration found on this one sheet has addressed slight fold wear and separation, pinholes, small tears, and chips at the vertical fold in Simone Simon's waist and credit. Some of these issues are still visible, as well as a few stains in the borders. Overall, however, the poster presents well and would be a boon for any horror collector.
