Black Narcissus (Universal International, 1947). Window Card (14" X 22").
Winning Oscars for Art Direction and Cinematography, this British drama directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger stars Deborah Kerr, a nun who must deal with temptations while building a convent in the Himalayas. The recreation of the impressive mountain range was all done in studio, using glass shots, miniatures and black and white photos that were colored with pastel chalks. Cinematographer Jack Cardiff said that the lighting and color were inspired by artists such as Van Gogh, Vermeer and Caravaggio. The lighting schemes used to get those effects were not the usual techniques that Technicolor specialist Natalie Kalmus was used to, but she came to appreciate it after seeing rushes. An executive with Technicolor later said that the film was the best use of the process that he had seen. There is a minor stain in the lower left corner, creasing and a small tear in the upper border, and a small bend in the upper left corner. Very Fine+.
