Description
The Third Man (Selznick, 1949). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. French Moyenne (23.25" X 31.5").Among the best of the film noirs, Orson Welles appears on screen for only about ten minutes, but his presence in the film looms large, helping cement the film's noir mystique. The striking use of Dutch angles and Vienna's real bombed-out ruins gave the film its distinct visual style, earning it an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Orson Welles, who played the enigmatic Harry Lime, famously improvised his iconic "cuckoo clock" speech, despite initial resistance from writer Graham Greene, who's screenplay was written as a novella first, not for publication but to help develop the film script. Director Carol Reed reportedly spent hours timing shots to match the rhythms of Anton Karas's zither music, which he discovered by chance in a Vienna beer garden, and the haunting score was an unexpected hit, propelling the theme to international popularity. Backed to linen, there has been touch-up to the folds to address wear, small splits and minute chips; pinholes to the corners, small chips and small splits to the edges. Thanks to these issues the poster presents well. There is some scuffing and light foxing to the linen.
