Description

Douglas Fairbanks Stock Poster (Artcraft Pictures, c.1918-1919). Three Sheet (42" X 80").
The handsome image that graces this phenomenally rare three sheet celebrates one of the biggest stars of the silent era, Douglas Fairbanks. In an inauspicious beginning, Fairbanks worked a series of odd jobs - including cattle freighter, hardware store employee, and Wall Street clerk - before landing on Broadway in 1902. He relocated to Hollywood in 1915, where he began the film career that would make him an international icon. Handsome, charming, and athletic, Fairbanks started out in a series of light comic roles, but soon discovered his flair for swashbuckling adventure when he starred in The Mark of Zorro in 1920, a role that lifted him to megastar status virtually overnight. Famously married to "America's Sweetheart," Mary Pickford, the couple, along with Charlie Chaplin and director D. W. Griffith, founded United Artists in 1919, making Fairbanks one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. A Heritage first, this is a special stock poster with stone litho artwork of the dapper silver screen legend, most likely dating from a time shortly before Zorro. Touchup was applied to the folds, a small chip in Fairbanks' face along the fold, two tears in the right border, and two tears in the left border. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
