Description

The Third Man (London Films, 1950). Very Fine- on Linen. First German Release A1 (23.25" X 33").
Director Carol Reed's stylish film noir set in post-war Vienna stars Joseph Cotten as hack writer "Holly Martins" who travels to Europe at the conclusion of World War II to take a job with his old friend, "Harry Lime" (Orson Welles), only to find himself attempting to solve Lime's apparent murder. Revered for its adventurous camera angles, atmospheric settings, high contrast lighting, and unusual zither score, The Third Man is considered one of the greatest British films ever made. This German A1 poster captures the film's foreboding, mysterious air, depicting Martins catching sight of the supposedly dead Lime with his own shadow looming on the edge of the scene. Backed on linen, the piece exhibited fold wear, pinholes, and writing on the back that bled through in the upper left corner. Touchup was applied to the folds, the corners, and spots in the borders. The poster exhibits some scattered pinholes, light scuffing, and a spot of paint in the bottom margin.
