Australia Travel Poster (Australian Railways Commissioners,1928). Full-Bleed Poster (25" X 40") "Australia Calls You," Artist: Percy Trompf.
This very rare Australian travel poster is the work of commercial artist Percy Trompf (1902-1964), whose optimistic, inviting images were in high demand for travel posters during the Great Depression. This particular work was part of an overseas campaign targeting settlers, investors, or tourists in England, the United States, Canada, and South Africa to discover Australia. Trompf painted the background with a country scene featuring a gum (Eucalyptus) tree, a wooden fence running beside a lane, gentle mountain ridges, and an expansive sky, all in a kaleidoscope of lush greens and blues, warm oranges and pinks, and soothing earthy browns. In the foreground is a standing globe casting a shadow and highlighting Australia in pinkish-red as a member of the British Empire. The poster has been carefully restored to correct missing paper in the corners which extends a little into the background and "Australia." Now display-ready, the piece will make a lovely addition for avid travel poster collectors. Very Good/Fine on Linen.
