Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (Svensk Filmindustri, 1922). Photos (114) (3.5" X 4.5").
Danish filmmaker Benjamin Christensen's haunting study about superstition fueled irrational conclusions regarding disease and mental illness that ultimately lead to witch hunts, is a masterpiece of silent horror. Upon obtaining a copy of Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th century treatise about the prosecution of witches, Christensen would spend years studying manuals and illustrations regarding witchcraft. The result of which would be the most expensive Scandinavian silent film ever produced. The picture features what were then considered intense and graphic depictions of perversion, nudity, and torture, causing the film to be banned in the United States. This incredibly rare collection of vintage gelatin silver, double weight photos from the film, quite possibly the largest known group to come from private hands, showcases several of the controversial scenes of torture and demonic imagery. Showing minor smudging on some, the photos are housed in a photo album that has protected them for many years. The album shows wear to the cover and spine, none of which has affected the photos. Also included is the August, 1965 issue of Playboy Magazine, which features images from the film in an interesting article about sex in cinema. Original paper and photos of any kind from the film are incredibly scarce. A collection of this size will no doubt draw the attention of collectors, and should not be passed up by silent horror devotees. Very Fine.
