On the Waterfront (Columbia, 1954). French Grande (46" X 62.75") Style A.
This Oscar winning 1954 film about mob violence and corruption among longshoremen has become a standard of its kind. Based on a series of articles written in the New York Sun by Malcolm Johnson, it tells the story of Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando), who is a washed-up ex-prizefighter in his mid-twenties, working on the docks for the local gang boss, Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb). The film was ranked the 8th greatest American film of all time by the AFI. Artist Cyril Arnstam (1919-1983) created two posters for the French release of the film, including this magnificent Style A piece, a first time offer from Heritage. Touchup has been applied to fold wear, small tears and creasing. There is an ink mark in Brando's jacket. None of these imperfections detract from the grandeur of the piece, a sure hit with devoted fans of this classic film. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
