Description

Marilyn Monroe "Golden Dreams" by Tom Kelley (Tom Kelley, 1952). Calendar (16" X 34"). Miscellaneous.
Quite possibly this is the most popular calendar ever printed. In fact, in the early 1950s, no car repair or equipment company (actually, anywhere "men" congregated) was complete without a "Golden Dreams" on the wall. Photographer Tom Kelley paid Marilyn Monroe a mere $50 for photos that he made millions from. She did it to free her impounded car. The story broke in 1952, with Marilyn admonishing a smirking press core who inquired if she posed with nothing on, "Oh no...I did have something on...the radio." Of course Marilyn quipped in her trademark wide-eyed innocent breathy whisper. It has been one of the most frequently reproduced calendars of all time, but this one's real! It was printed in 1952 and delivered with 1953 calendar pages, three of which remain. It hung on the walls of an equipment company in Charlotte, North Carolina. This photo was so popular that in December of 1953, a sharp young man purchased the right to publish "Golden Dreams" as a "centerfold" fold-out for the new men's magazine he was launching. His name was Hugh Hefner. An unrestored calendar that may be slightly brittle due to age, shows some paper loss or staining, writing in an unobtrusive place, edge wear with tears, surface creases and wrinkles, and corner bumps. It is most likely in need of some degree of work or restoration, but the color is very bright. Please see full-color, enlargeable image below for more details. Rolled, Very Good+.
