Bitter Sweet (United Artists, 1933). Very Fine on Paper. One Sheet (28.25" X 41") Hans Flato Artwork. From the Mike Kaplan Collection. Not only is it Heritage's first time to offer this beautiful one sheet, but it is the only known copy of the poster still in existence today. In addition to that, it features stylized and passionate artwork by the German-born illustrator Hans Flato, who was particularly known for his gorgeous Art Deco creations. As the first of two film adaptations made for Coward's play, with this one starring Anna Neagle and Fernand Gravey, director Herbert Wilcox's picture is considered to be the better film, due in large part to his adherence to the original operetta's plot. Done in rich stone litho printing, this one sheet is in great condition and has received light touchup to the upper crossfold. Unaddressed wear includes unobtrusive stains and smudges, as well as a few small tears. The paper has been trimmed to the edges, but not into the poster. Above all, this one-of-a-kind one sheet is a wonderful display piece in excellent condition, truly a poster that should be of note to any musical fan.
