The Great McGinty (Paramount, 1940). Folded, Fine/Very Fine. One Sheet (27" X 41") & Title Snipe (27" X 10.5"). Working Title: Down Went McGinty. From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
This was screenwriter Preston Sturges' first directorial effort, and it won an Oscar for best screenplay. The story of a Depression-era bum, who shows his aptitude for placing crooked votes, is soon on his way to running for mayor. All of what would later become earmarks of Sturges' work are here. Never before offered by Heritage, this one sheet has the working title Down Went McGinty and a title snipe with the final title is included in this lot. Signs of age include some fold wear and separation, small chips, pinholes, and tears, including at tear that extends from the top left edge into the "d" and "o" of "Down." Also apparent are some stains, soft rippling, subtle ink stamp bleedthrough, as well as faint toning. There is a strip of paper tape bracing a tear on the verso.
