Metropolis (UFA, 1927). Fine/Very Fine. Behind the Scenes German Photographs by Horst von Harbou (4) (4.5" X 6.5"to 5" X 7"). Offered here are extraordinary behind-the-scenes views from the set the seminal sci-fi film Metropolis captured by Horst von Harbou. The brother of Thea von Harbou, the film's screenwriter and then-wife of director Fritz Lang, Horst served as a set photographer for UFA productions, including many of Thea and Lang's films. The photos depict Fritz Lang and Karl Freund setting up a makeshift dolly shot, Lang having a shave on set, the director trimming Alfred Abel's eyebrows, and Lang giving direction to Brigitte Helm as she stands on one leg. All retain handwritten notation and archive ink stamps on the verso. Original production material from the Fritz Lang masterpiece is virtually unheard of. This lot presents a rare opportunity at a peek at one of the most significant productions in cinema history.
