The Curse of Frankenstein (Warner Bros., 1957). Very Fine on Linen. British Double Crown (20" X 30") Advance.
For the first time at Heritage (or any major American auction), this is the poster that announced the arrival of Hammer Horror era to the world. The use of photographic imagery in the design portended the franchise's bold reinvention of Universal monsters with contemporary grit and realism. Unlike the sympathetic creature of Universal's 1931 film, Christopher Lee portrays the character as brutal and nearly wordless, while Peter Cushing's "Baron Frankenstein" is cold and obsessive. Hammer's house style emphasized vivid Technicolor gore, madness, and moral ambiguity, setting a darker, more visceral tone which launched the studio's golden age and firmly established them as the new leader in horror cinema. Backed to linen, the poster received light touchup to the corners and background. It remains as striking and provocative as it would have to 1950s filmgoers, and would be a significant addition to any advanced genre collection.
