Night and the City (20th Century Fox, 1950). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. French Grande (47" X 63") Roger Soubie Artwork.
Night and the City, directed by Jules Dassin, stands as a defining work of film noir, renowned for its shadowy cinematography, morally ambiguous characters, and stark depiction of postwar despair. Set in London, it stars Richard Widmark as a desperate hustler whose relentless drive for success spirals toward inevitable downfall. Produced during a turbulent chapter in Dassin's career - when he was informally blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee - the film was completed in the U.K., though he was prevented from returning to the U.S. for post-production and was later officially blacklisted. This French poster, offered by Heritage for only the second time, showcases Roger Soubie's striking design, which conveys the film's tension and fatalism through bold contrasts and a dramatic, distorted perspective. Backed to linen, touchup has addressed fold wear, splits, chips, crossfold separation, small tears and ink stamp bleedthrough. There is light toning to the folds, typical of French posters of this era, and fraying to the edge of the linen.
