Description

The Great Mexican War (El Paso Feature Film Company, 1914). Three Sheet (41" X 80").
This very early and beautifully rendered stone litho three sheet is one of a group of posters recently discovered and featured in an episode of PBS' History Detectives. According to their research, copies of the original film still exist. The film is a four-reel documentary about the Mexican Revolution and its charismatic leader Pancho Villa, who fascinated Americans in 1914. It was filmed and hosted by Dr. Charles A. Pryor, a showman, and bit of an unscrupulous character who bolstered his credentials in order to secure film rights to Villa's story and to sell his film to American theaters. Shortly after the release, he was arrested for grand larceny, never delivering the movie to some theater owners. We have offered one other copy of this historically significant poster in a previous sale and are proud to also offer a six sheet in this auction. This sheet shows slight trimming to the top edge, fold wear, edge wear with chips, bends in the bottom corners, and a small hole in the top right corner. It is backed by muslin with grommets in the corners, as was the custom in the early days of the cinema. As these posters were often reused for multiple venues, the muslin made them more durable than they would otherwise have been. Also included is a broadside that advertises the film. Very Good/Fine on Muslin.
