Description
The Black Cat (Universal, 1934). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style D.Incest, murder, torture, devil worship and perverse psychological obsessions are layered throughout this film as Karloff and Lugosi play a game of chess to determine the fate of a young couple. Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi were cast together for their first horror film in Edgar G. Ulmer's adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale. The film is one of the true masterpieces of the horror genre and has so many ghoulish oddities it's hard to imagine how the film was made in 1934! Any material on this film is exceedingly difficult to acquire. This is only the fourth copy known to exist of this one sheet produced by Universal. This gorgeous copy has been linenbacked and has had two small semi-circular holes repaired in the top border which did not extend into the art! The poster has minimal horizontal foldline wear which has been delicately repaired with watercolor pencil. There was no vertical fold in this poster! There were five tiny pinholes in the lower border. There was virtually no crossfold wear or separation. At one time in the past the poster was laid atop something that left a diagonal indentation of about 12" from the border above the cat's left ear into the artwork of the black field between the image of Lugosi and the cat's eye. There was another line, parallel to the one just mentioned, that ran about 1/4" below it for about 5" from the top border. These were not worn in any way and were virtually completely diminished when linenbacked. The colors on this poster are as brilliant as the day it was printed and we feel the condition is sure to please any one who were to purchase it. Very Fine+ on Linen.
