Description
Wings (Paramount, 1927). One Sheet (26" X 40.25") Style D. William Wellman was born to direct the 1927 blockbuster and first Best Picture Oscar recipient. Nicknamed "Wild Bill," due to his penchant for literally trading punches with actors (notably Spencer Tracy), off-stage stunts and wild parties, Wellman joined the French Foreign Legion at the outbreak of WWI, flying in the Lafayette Escadrille. After the war, he continued his flying career as a barnstormer before turning his attention to film directing. The film had a $2 million budget in excess of the military investment of $16 million in supplies and used thousands of soldiers, almost all the existing army pursuit aircraft, and the top rank of military fliers. Wellman created a major film attraction with newcomers Richard Arlen, Buddy Rogers and the beautiful Clara Bow. Offered in this lot is a one sheet to this classic film. This beautiful stone litho poster is pictured in the original release pressbook and is a rare, full-bleed poster with all copyright information inside the image. (Paramount produced these borderless posters on occasion for their bigger releases.) The poster has a small bit of paper missing from the blue border in the upper right and a small hole in the image just above the large tree in the upper right of the poster. This poster has amazingly vibrant colors and appears unused. This is the only copy of this poster known as far as we can determine.
